Weekly jobless claim numbers released by the Department of Labor today show more than 1 million people filed for state unemployment claims last week, bringing the total to 58 million since March.
In response, Protect Our Care’s Coronavirus War Room Director Zac Petkanas released the following statement:
“For more than five months now, the unemployment numbers have shown what families across the country already know too well – Donald Trump has driven the economy into the ground by failing to get the pandemic under control.
“Instead of taking decisive action to stop the virus, Trump is spending his time directing his goons to strong-arm independent agencies like the CDC to recommend less testing, undermining experts urging against a rush to reopen states and mocking mitigation efforts like wearing face masks.
“The truth is that we can’t fix the economy or end the anxiety that is plaguing every American family until Trump controls the outbreaks.
“This economic catastrophe is directly linked to Donald Trump’s failed leadership. But, once again, our President is just making things worse – both by continuing to downplay the danger and refusing to help the millions of Americans who have lost their jobs, are being evicted from their homes or who are struggling to make ends meet.”
