STATEMENT: Trump’s Last Week in Office Saw 900,000 People File for Unemployment

In response to continued catastrophic unemployment levels in the final days of the Trump Administration, Protect Our Care’s Coronavirus War Room Director Zac Petkanas released the following statement:

“The last week of the Trump Administration ended in a familiar way – with weekly unemployment claims that surpass even the worst weeks of the Great Recession and 900,000 people trying to figure out how to keep food on the table.

“The country has now suffered previously unfathomable levels of unemployment claims for nearly an entire year. It’s a direct result of Donald Trump’s failure to get the virus under control and now it’s being left on President Joe Biden’s doorstep to fix.

“The good news is that hours into his term, President Biden is already taking the steps necessary to confront the economic crisis that Trump allowed to fester. With an eviction moratorium, a push for more direct stimulus, and outlines for a serious effort to finally end this pandemic, President Biden is confronting the economic disaster head-on. It’s the response that families hit hardest by this pandemic have needed and deserved all along.”
