STATEMENT: Trump is Directly Responsible for Economic Disaster America Is in Now
In response to the new unemployment numbers that show the United States lost 20.5 million jobs in April and hit 14.7% unemployment, Coronavirus War Room director Zac Petkanas issued the following statement:
“President Donald Trump is directly responsible for the economic disaster America faces right now. Instead of spending months downplaying the threat of coronavirus, Trump could have listened to experts and responded decisively to prevent things from getting this bad.
“Unlike the United States, South Korea never had to fully shut down its economy because they prioritized testing early on. Instead of facing sky-high levels of unemployment today, their citizens are safely back to work.
“This could have been the path of the United States if Trump had followed South Korea’s lead and took testing more seriously. Unfortunately, the United States has still only reported 8.1 million tests in a country of more than 328 million people. That number is so low that even Republican senator and Trump ally Lamar Alexander says that’s not nearly enough testing to safely reopen the country and get people back to work.
“The millions of Americans filling out unemployment forms won’t forget that this disaster could have been largely avoided if Trump had just done his job and made testing a top priority.”
