In response to Mitch McConnell releasing a laughably inadequate relief package in the face of restarted negotiations and competing Senate proposals, Protect Our Care’s Coronavirus War Room Director Zac Petkanas released the following statement:
“For nearly 200 days, Mitch McConnell has chosen to obstruct any meaningful COVID relief package from reaching the American people. Today, while his colleagues work to find common ground, he continues to stand in the way of progress.
“His new proposal is a slap in the face to millions of Americans. It’s almost laughably inadequate in the face of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression and a health situation that spirals further out of control.
“It’s not half a loaf. It’s crumbs.
“No state and local aid to pay for first responders and essential workers, no stimulus checks for struggling families and no protections for people’s health insurance if they’ve been laid off. What he does include is special legal protections for massive corporations that endanger their workers during the pandemic and tax cuts to Wall Street interests.
“That’s not a relief bill for families hit by the crisis. It’s a massive taxpayer funded giveaway to the rich and powerful. Once again, McConnell and Senate Republicans are showing their true colors by turning their backs on those who are in desperate need of help in favor of their corporate campaign donors.”
