White House Cited Model Predicted 60k Americans Would Die By August
Trump Repeatedly Said Only 60k Americans Would Die In Total
Yesterday, the official death count of people who have died of the coronavirus on U.S. soil reached 60,000 after weeks of President Trump saying that only 60,000 people would die from the virus and a model often-cited by the White House estimating that 60,000 wouldn’t die until August.
In other words, under Trump’s leadership more Americans are dying faster than models predicted and Trump promised.
On April 8th, A Model Used By The White House Predicted That 60,415 People Would Die From Coronavirus In The U.S. By August.
- “A key forecasting model used by the White House has revised its prediction of COVID-19 deaths in the U.S., now estimating a peak of 60,415 by early August. The model created by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington had predicted a peak of 81,766 deaths in an update on Sunday.” [The Hill, 4/8/20]

- The New York Times has suggested that the real death toll is far higher than reported: “Total deaths in seven states that have been hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic are nearly 50 percent higher than normal for the five weeks from March 8 through April 11, according to new death statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That is 9,000 more deaths than were reported as of April 11 in official counts of deaths from the coronavirus.” [New York Times, 4/28/20]
Trump On April 20, 2020: “But we’re going toward 50- or 60,000 people. That’s at the lower — as you know, the low number was supposed to be 100,000 people. We — we could end up at 50 to 60. Okay?”
Trump On April 19, 2020: “But we would have had millions of deaths instead of — it looks like we’ll be at about a 60,000 mark, which is 40,000 less than the lowest number thought of.
