STATEMENT: Senate GOP’s Vote-a-Rama Poison Pill Amendments a Last Ditch Attempt to Block $1,400 Checks, Vaccine Distribution, Lower Health Care Costs

As the Senate begins debate on the American rescue plan today, Protect Our Care’s Coronavirus War Room Director Zac Petkanas released the following statement:

“As the floor debate on the American Rescue Plan gets underway in the Senate today, Senate Republicans are doubling down on their last-ditch efforts to kill the bill rather than give Americans much needed economic relief during this crisis.

“Their amendments during vote-a-rama are not meant to improve the bill. They’re meant to kill it.

“That means no funding for $1,400 direct stimulus checks, faster vaccine distribution, lower health care costs, faster school reopening, small businesses struggling to keep their doors open, expanded unemployment insurance and aid for state and local governments to keep frontline healthcare workers on the job.

“It’s outrageous and politically stupid for Senate Republicans to choose blind partisanship over relief for Americans in this overwhelmingly popular bill.

“If Senate Republicans had any care for the wellbeing of their constituents during this crisis, they would immediately end their partisan obstruction and get the bill as quickly as possible to President Biden’s desk so that Americans get the relief they desperately need.”
