US Records More Than 2,800 New Deaths, Most of Any Day Since the Beginning of the Pandemic
C.D.C. Director Dr. Redfield Warns Americans Are Facing “The Most Difficult Time in the Public Health History of This Nation.”
GWU’s Dr. Reiner: “By This Time Next Week, We Are Going to Be Talking About 3,000 Deaths a Day — That’s 9/11 Every Single Day.”
For months President Trump promised the American people that we were “rounding the turn,” on the pandemic, and that — miraculously — the virus would disappear after the Presidential election.
Nothing could have been further from the truth. Trump’s baseless lies were used to justify his administration’s abdication of responsibility for the virus. Trump and his allies let the virus run rampant, and now Americans are facing the consequences.
The United States just reported more than 2,800 deaths to COVID-19 in a single day, a record since the pandemic began. Hospitalizations for the virus have surged above 100,000. And as experts warn that the holiday season could mark the most dangerous public health crisis in the history of this country, the Trump White House is planning a series of reckless parties that will cost more lives.

- Hospitalizations Are Rising In 38 States, And Have Increased 26 Percent In Just Two Weeks. “For weeks, every available data point has said the same thing — that the pandemic is as bad as it’s ever been in the U.S. Yesterday’s grim new milestone represents an 11% increase in hospitalizations over the past week, and a 26% jump over the past two weeks. Hospitalizations are rising in 38 states, in some cases reaching unsustainable levels.” [Axios, 12/3/20]
- The American Ambulance Association: The 911 Emergency Call System Is “At A Breaking Point.” “The 911 emergency call system is ‘at a breaking point,’ the American Ambulance Association, which represents all of the nation’s ambulance services, said in a letter Wednesday. ‘Without additional relief, it seems likely to break, even as we enter the third surge of the virus in the Midwest and West,’ the letter said.” [CNN, 12/2/20]
- The CDC Is Projecting As Many As Almost 20,000 Deaths To COVID-19 The Week Of Christmas Alone. “The recent spate of good news about a vaccine was leavened by a sobering update released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that forecasts thousands of new covid-19 deaths in the United States over the next four weeks, including an estimated 9,500 to 19,500 deaths the week of Christmas alone.” [Washington Post, 12/3/20]
- Dr. Jonathan Reiner, Cardiologist And Professor Of Medicine At George Washington University: “By This Time Next Week, We Are Going To Be Talking About 3,000 Deaths A Day — That’s 9/11 Every Single Day.” “The country’s daily average of Covid-19 deaths across a week is 1,654 — above its summer high of around 1,130 but lower than the pandemic peak above 2,240 in late April. ‘By this time next week, we are going to be talking about 3,000 deaths a day — that’s 9/11 every single day,’ Dr. Jonathan Reiner, a cardiologist and professor of medicine at George Washington University, told CNN on Wednesday.” [CNN, 12/3/20]
- CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield: “December And January And February… [Are] Going To Be The Most Difficult Time In The Public Health History Of This Nation.” “‘The reality is, December and January and February are going to be tough times,’ said Dr. Robert Redfield, speaking at an event with the US Chamber of Commerce. ‘I actually believe they’re going to be the most difficult time in the public health history of this nation.’ Redfield warned that total deaths in the US could near 450,000 by February if people don’t follow public health recommendations to mitigate the virus’s spread, including wearing masks, practicing social distancing, washing hands, and opting to do things outdoors instead of indoors when possible.” [Boston Globe, 12/2/20]
- White House Coronavirus Task Force: “The COVID Risk To All Americans Is At A Historic High.” “The White House coronavirus task force issued extremely dire warnings to states in weekly reports this week, urging public health officials to circumvent state and local policies amid record high cases, hospitalizations and deaths, as well as fears of a surge upon a surge following Thanksgiving. ‘The COVID risk to all Americans is at a historic high,’ say the reports dated November 29, which were shared with states and obtained by CNN… ‘We are in a very dangerous place due to the current, extremely high COVID baseline and limited hospital capacity; a further post-Thanksgiving surge will compromise COVID patient care, as well as medical care overall.’” [CNN, 12/2/20]
