As today marks more than 200 days since the HEROES Act passed the House of Representatives and Mitch McConnell’s refusal to take up the bill, Protect Our Care’s Coronavirus War Room Director Zac Petkanas released the following statement:
“For more than 200 days, the HEROES Act has sat on Mitch McConnell’s desk while American families have struggled to endure the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression and a worsening public health situation.
“For the better part of a year, McConnell has obstructed any meaningful relief package. Since HEROES passed, 177,900 Americans have died, more than 12 million have been infected, hospitalizations set records, and more than 8 million Americans have fallen into poverty. He’s chosen politics over people’s health and safety.
“Now, McConnell and his Republican allies are offering an insult of a package that offers no money for state and local communities to pay for first-responders or essential workers, no stimulus checks for the people struggling to make ends meet, and no protections for people who may lose their health care in the middle of a global pandemic. What it does include is liability insurance for companies that knowingly endanger their employees and tax write-offs for corporate donors.
“McConnell made his priorities clear more than 200 days ago when he refused to take up the HEROES Act and the American people aren’t one of them.
“As Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans continue to serve as barriers to meaningful relief, Protect Our Care released a new national television ad and polling memo on the GOP’s ongoing obstruction which can be found here.”
