In response to the release of unemployment numbers today that show nearly 750,000 people filed jobless claims last week, Protect Our Care’s Coronavirus War Room Director Zac Petkanas released the following statement:
“For the 35th week in a row, these catastrophic unemployment numbers rival the worst days of the Great Recession.
“The situation has reached an emergency level with hundreds of thousands filing for unemployment weekly, 21 million collecting benefits, and millions pushed into poverty since March.
“Given these figures, it’s unconscionable that Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump continue to block a meaningful relief package while millions of families suffer. A one-time check of $1200 last spring and a wish of ‘good luck’ just doesn’t cut it when trying to survive a global crisis.
“The longer they delay, the clearer it becomes that their only goal is to hand President-elect Joe Biden the worst economic catastrophe possible, using families struggling to make ends meet as pawns in his gross political games.
“However, their sabotage is transparent and the American people know that the lingering economic crisis rests solely in their hands.”
