Today, Protect Our Care’s Coronavirus War Room announced the launch of a new initiative to respond to the escalating coronavirus crisis.

This new effort will launch during a uniquely dangerous time before President-elect Joe Biden assumes office on January 20. The United States is heading into a disastrous third wave of the virus where deaths, infection rates and hospitalizations are hitting record-breaking levels, and families are struggling with an economic crisis that rivals the worst days of the Great Recession.

Despite the universal understanding that immediate and robust action is needed, there is no indication that Republican leadership will meet the urgency of the moment to stave off further health and economic calamity. In fact, there is already evidence that the Trump Administration will continue allowing the crisis to get worse and worse, leaving President Joe Biden with an even more difficult task when he takes over.

To that end, Protect Our Care’s Coronavirus War Room’s new initiative will focus on three areas during the coming months:

  • Supporting the passage of a robust COVID relief package that addresses the health and economic emergency facing America and holding Republicans accountable for any partisan opposition;
  • Promoting President-elect Biden’s COVID-response plan and appointments;
  • Exposing the ongoing failures of the Trump Administration and their congressional allies to protect us from the virus — including any efforts to sabotage the response — making the crisis even worse before the Biden Administration assumes office.

To achieve these goals, the organization will include:

  • The aggressive rapid response program built over the last year, including unique communications and research products;
  • Regular polling and message guidance for allies and media;
  • Robust paid media and digital content strategy to educate the public;
  • Weekly rapid response calls with partner organizations to coordinate activities and message.

“Donald Trump’s historic landslide loss at the ballot box doesn’t mean we are out of the woods,”  said Protect Our Care’s Coronavirus War Room Director Zac Petkanas. “Trump will remain president for nearly three more months as cases, hospitalizations and deaths accelerate during a third wave. The stakes are too high to wait for a Biden presidency to begin addressing the health and economic consequences of Trump’s failed coronavirus response. That’s why we are going to commit all our resources to not only push for action that meets the urgency of this moment but to guard against any further efforts from an increasingly erratic Trump Administration to sabotage the response before sanity takes over.”
