Jobless claims this week totalled over 1.3 million. In response, Protect Our Care’s Coronavirus War Room Director Zac Petkanas issued the following statement:
“Donald Trump is directly responsible for the millions of people who have lost their jobs during the coronavirus crisis. The reality is that we wouldn’t be seeing unemployment claims top a million week after week if Trump had simply listened to the experts and taken the needed steps to slow the spread of coronavirus early on.
“Trump wasted weeks downplaying the crisis while other countries acted decisively to do things like ramp up testing and implement aggressive social distancing measures. As a result, South Korea, Japan, and other countries never had to fully shut down like we did, and their economies never faced the mass contraction that ours did in the US.
“And now, as infections surge across the country, Trump is still not addressing the core issues that paralyzed our economy in the first place. Instead, he’s doubling down on his failed strategy of rushing to reopen before it’s safe to do so. This is exacerbating the health crisis and will only lead to additional economic pain.”
