STATEMENT: Jobless Claims a Direct Result of Trump’s Incompetent Virus Response
Over 1.8 million Americans filed for unemployment last week, increasing the total number of unemployment insurance claims to 42.6 million since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. In response, Coronavirus War Room Director Zac Petkanas issued the following statement:
“The economy is teetering on collapse for one reason: Donald Trump’s disastrous response to the coronavirus.
“If the president had just taken the crisis seriously early on the country wouldn’t have needed to go into total lockdown and tens of millions of people could have avoided filing for unemployment insurance. The stark reality is that much of today’s suffering could have been averted if Trump had simply listened to the experts begging him to take decisive action in January and February to ramp up testing.
“Instead, he downplayed the virus, insisted it would just go away on its own and allowed the US to fall behind after he broke his promises on securing enough tests for all Americans who needed them.
“It’s time for Donald Trump to stop blaming others for the nation’s dire economic situation, take responsibility for his failure to act and take immediate steps to get the United States back on track to control the rapid spread of this virus.”
