They’re Yelling at Kids Now
Governor DeSantis moments after harassing the school children behind him for choosing to wear a mask.
This week, President Biden delivered his State of the Union address, outlining how far we’ve come on containing COVID-19 thanks to the tools not available when he took office a year ago. The next day, the Biden administration released the National COVID-19 Preparedness Plan, a comprehensive and reasonable approach outlining how we can move forward towards normalcy. And today, the February job report shows that our economy is continuing to add jobs thanks to the economic agenda of President Biden.
Meanwhile in Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis lost his mind.
At a press conference, a clearly agitated DeSantis berated a group of high school students who chose to wear masks, telling them that it was “ridiculous”, before turning to the podium and shaking his head. He didn’t know these students. Maybe they have an immunocompromised family member. Maybe their parents asked them to wear masks. Maybe they just wanted to wear a mask because they’d be inside and close to ‘Rona Ron DeSantis himself.
Whatever the reason, the governor’s response was clearly embarrassing, rude, and not befitting of an adult, let alone the governor of Florida. Personal choice and freedom clearly only matter if they don’t ruin Governor DeSantis’ photo op, no matter the age of the people expressing their freedom.
The next day he doubled down, continuing his quest to demean the office of governor as much as possible by releasing a bizarre and immature video on Twitter mocking Democrats for choosing not to wear masks, featuring clips from Family Guy. And he and his controversial surgeon general Dr. Joseph Ladapo kept the meltdown going at a press conference the next day where they continued to spread the lie that masks don’t work.
It’s baffling that anyone would try to defend yelling at children, but it just shows the lengths DeSantis will stoop to in order to politicize this pandemic. Even teenagers aren’t immune from being collateral damage in his quest for political power.
Elsewhere, in defense of the bill getting rid of the vaccine mandate for health care workers, Senator Roger Marshall donned his stethoscope and argued that getting COVID-19 is a great way to combat COVID-19. And 48 Republicans ended up voting to end the COVID-19 emergency. A reminder that nearly a million Americans have died after contracting the virus.
Then, there was the expected GOP hissy fit around the State of the Union. Governor DeSantis bragged about his rejection of President Biden’s request for governors to send state National Guards to Washington for the State of the Union, though he was happy to accept billions of dollars in federal funding for COVID-19 relief. Republicans like Senator Marco Rubio declined to take twenty minutes out of their day to take a test in order to attend. And Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds gave the Republican response, where she bragged about the GOP’s response to the pandemic.
Of course, reality shows she and the rest of the Republican party have nothing to brag about.
